Reviving the Nuclear Industry: How Locus’ Software is Leading the Way
As the nuclear industry prepares for a resurgence, the need for modern, efficient, and reliable data management and compliance solutions has never been greater. At Locus Technologies, we are proud to play a pivotal role in this revival, building on our decades of expertise and deep roots in the nuclear sector.
Since our founding, Locus has partnered with key players in the nuclear industry, including the Department of Energy (DOE) and leading nuclear sites such as Los Alamos National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and the Stanford Linear Accelerator. These facilities, alongside others in the energy and defense sectors, rely on Locus’ award-winning Environmental Information Management (EIM) software to streamline data management, enhance compliance, and drive operational excellence.
Our commitment to supporting the nuclear industry’s growth extends beyond software. Locus has been involved in vital industry events to gain actionable insights into radiological effluent, environmental monitoring, and groundwater protection.
Locus’s software automates Radioactive Effluent Technical Specifications (RETS) preparation, Radiological Environmental Monitoring Programs (REMP), Annual Radiological Environmental Operating Report (AREOR), environmental sampling planning, dose assessment and management, meteorological tracking and management at commercial nuclear power plants. We have helped many utilities unify their efforts and refine groundwater protection and radiological monitoring programs. NRC requires annual reporting for all REMP programs (ODCM, NUREG1301/1302). Locus software provides highly formatted statistical output summarizing a year’s worth of analytical data, trending, and data comparisons to established background levels; summary tables are per media sampled – typically requiring at least ten tables to be generated annually for this one requirement. If not done in an automated fashion, the necessary tedious reporting for large datasets can lead to very time-consuming reporting. Before Locus, most sites created their summary tables, typically outside of a database, by manually manipulating analytical data to fit into the AREOR summary table format. Generating AREOR summary tables before Locus would have taken customers between two and four weeks, with summary tables being the most significant burden. Locus EIM automates this report to run year over year with simple date range changes in seconds.
In the past, many nuclear facilities relied on outdated tools like spreadsheets to manage critical data. While once sufficient, these methods now present significant challenges when creating complex reports or integrating data across systems. Locus EIM offers a modern, web-based alternative that connects seamlessly with existing tools while ensuring compliance with stringent QA/QC standards like ANSI/ISO/ASQ Q 9001:2000 and NQA-1. This standard, developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), is specifically tailored for the nuclear industry. It provides guidelines for establishing and maintaining quality assurance programs in nuclear facilities. NQA-1 is widely adopted in the nuclear sector to maintain operational and safety integrity.
With nuclear operations becoming increasingly complex—whether decommissioning older power plants or addressing the launch of a new generation of plants and new environmental challenges—EIM stands out as the market leader. Our platform not only enforces robust QA/QC requirements but also ensures data security and validation, making it an invaluable tool for managing radioactive data in compliance with NRC and other regulatory standards.
As interest in nuclear power continues to grow, the industry’s focus on leveraging innovative environmental monitoring and protection technologies is growing. At Locus, we’re honored to support these initiatives and to introduce our enhanced radionuclides EIM functionality, which empowers utilities to manage radioactive and environmental compliance data more effectively in a single platform.
The nuclear industry is at a critical turning point, and Locus is ready to help navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead. Whether through cutting-edge software or collaborative workshops, we are committed to driving the industry forward.
Let’s work together to build a more sustainable and resilient future for nuclear energy.
