The Montreal Treaty is an international agreement to reduce the use of ozone depleting substances (ODS), such as refrigerants with a high global warming potential (GWP). Refrigerants, particularly hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), are incredibly potent greenhouse gases that contribute significantly to global warming if not properly managed. According to Project Drawdown, refrigerant management is among the top five ways to quickly improve climate, which is why they are a priority for Locus Technologies.

The devastating impact of refrigerants

The EPA estimates that as of 2018, about 75% of total HFC use in the United States occurred in refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in commercial buildings, industrial operations, and homes; plus, approximately 8% in air conditioning in vehicles and refrigerated transport. A global HFC phasedown is expected to avoid up to 0.5°C of global warming by 2100, and the U.N. Environment Programme estimates that global efforts to tackle cooling emissions could avoid the release of up to 86 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2050. By comparison, energy-related CO2 emissions come to around 37 billion metric tons annually.

The importance of refrigerant management

Properly managing refrigerants can mitigate risks while also dramatically reducing carbon emissions and achieving Scope 1 and Scope 2 goals. It requires careful management of refrigerant types, uses, leaks, and disposal. Quickly identifying and resolving refrigerant leaks and properly reclaiming refrigerants at end-of-life significantly reduces harm. But executing a credible refrigerant plan requires a solid understanding of the moving parts, regulations, and tracking software like Locus Refrigerant Management.

Locus certifies professionals in refrigerant management

Locus experts lead the Certified Refrigerant Compliance Manager (CRCM) certification program in partnership with NREP. The program imparts the skills and knowledge to coordinate and manage comprehensive refrigerant management plans. The program spans environmental and safety compliance related to EPA requirements, regulations, and legal risks, refrigerant purchasing handling and use, and proper storage and disposal.
